Introduction:Niklas Zennstrom (Zennstrom) and Janus Friis (Friis), who invented KaZaA, the online file-sharing programme in 2000, entered the Internet telephony, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) market with their newservice, Skype. After analysing the existing VOIP services, Zennstrom and Friis found that one of the reasons why VOIP technology had not made a big impact on the mainstream market due to a technical snag that they felt Skype could avoid. Skype, launched in August 2003, used the same Peer-to-Peer (P2P) infrastructure that was the basis of KaZaA. Since there was no need for an expensive central infrastructure to maintain the service, the creators could offer Skype for free. Users could simply download Skype and make PC-to-PC calls, without requiring any telephone and paying just for the Internet service. |
